Marrying More than One is Desirable

Marrying More than One is Desirable
Question:

Some men marry more than one woman out of pride or in order to compete with one another and due to a genuine need. Is such a thing permissible? And what is your advice to those men and women who object to plurality when there is a need for it?
Answer:

Marrying more than one wife is a desirable thing - on condition that the man has the financial means and the physical ability to act with justice between his wives. This is because through plurality of wives, good is acheived, such as protecting the private parts of the women who he marries (from illegal sexual intercourse) and broadening of unity between the people, and increasing the number of births, as indicated by the Prophet sallallaahu alahi wasallam:

'Marry loving, productive women.' (Abu Dawud 2050, An-Nasaai' 3229, Ibn Hibbaan 4028, & Ahmad 3/158-245)

It also contains many other benefits. As for a man marrying more than one wife out of pride and competitiveness, it is something which falls into the category of waste, which is not permitted. Allaah, the Most High says:

'Waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).' (Al-'Araaf 7:31)

  1. Masha Allah sister, this issue is clearly elaborated by Dr. Zakir Niek Rahimahullah. it is neither farz nor Wajib or Mostahab and just comes under Mubah but when a person is not sure about his justice then marrying more than one woman is Haram in Islam.

  3. "Haram" is a strong and wrong word to use indeed.

The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) said admonishing the youth: “He who can afford to marry should marry, because it will keep him to lower his gaze (from looking at forbidden things and other women), and save his private parts (from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.) and he who cannot afford to marry is advised to observe fasting, as fasting will diminish his sexual power.” [Saheeh al-Bukhari, vol.3, no. 129].

and even better than that, Allah, the One free of all imperfection, the Most High, Says:

"And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan-girls then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four; but if you fear you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the slaves) that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice." [Qur’aan 4: 3; also refer to ch. 4, verses 25-26.]
